On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
